Food Expiration Dates: What They Really Mean

Food expiration dates can be confusing, and misunderstanding them often leads to unnecessary waste—or worse, eating unsafe food. Here’s what you need to know.

1. Types of Dates

“Use By” – This is the most important date for safety. Foods should be consumed by this date for best quality and to avoid health risks. Common on perishable items like meat, dairy, and prepared foods.

“Best Before” / “Best If Used By” – Indicates peak quality, not safety. Food may still be safe to eat after this date, but flavor, texture, or freshness could decline. Often seen on dry goods, canned foods, and packaged snacks.

“Sell By” – Tells the store how long to display the product. Not a safety indicator for consumers. You can usually eat these foods for days or weeks afterward, depending on the type.
